Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lauded the contributions of retiring members in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting their crucial role in strengthening parliamentary traditions and democratic values.

Speaking during the farewell session in the Upper House, Modi emphasised that the Rajya Sabha is a continuous institution where experience and wisdom remain invaluable. Addressing the outgoing members, he remarked, “There is no full stop in politics,” underlining that public service continues beyond formal tenures.

He further stated that every member plays a unique role in parliamentary discussions and that such moments often rise above party lines, fostering mutual respect among leaders.

Call for Learning from Senior Leaders

The Prime Minister urged younger parliamentarians to learn from experienced leaders and draw inspiration from their dedication. He stressed that politics is not limited to positions but is a continuous journey of service to society.

Modi highlighted that seasoned leaders set examples through their commitment, discipline, and sense of responsibility, which should guide the next generation of lawmakers.

Tribute to Veteran Politicians

During his address, Modi specifically mentioned senior leaders like H. D. Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar, praising their decades-long service in Parliament.

He noted that despite their vast experience, their continued dedication to public life remains inspiring. “Even after such long experience, new MPs should learn from them,” he said, appreciating their enduring contribution to democracy.

Praise for Deputy Chairman Harivansh

The Prime Minister also commended Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh for his calm and balanced handling of House proceedings.

Modi described him as hardworking and committed, noting his extensive travels and dedication to parliamentary duties. He added that Harivansh has carried out his responsibilities with sincerity and professionalism.

Concern Over Declining Humour in House

In a lighter moment, Modi observed that the Rajya Sabha was once known for its humour and satire, but such elements seem to be declining over time.

He praised Union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale, calling him “evergreen,” and said his presence brought humour and energy to the House. Modi added that even as Athawale completes his term, his unique style will continue to be remembered.

Emphasis on Upholding Parliamentary Dignity

Concluding his speech, the Prime Minister urged all members to uphold the dignity of Parliament and continue contributing to democratic values. He stressed that guidance from experienced leaders remains essential for strengthening India’s parliamentary system.
