Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin unveiled an expanded package of welfare measures aimed at supporting vulnerable communities across the state. The announcement follows the positive response to the Rs 2,000 summer grant earlier provided to women beneficiaries under the Kalaignar Women’s Entitlement Scheme, a flagship programme that offers monthly financial assistance to eligible women heads of households.
Rs 2,000 Special Grant Extended to Pensioners
In an official statement, Stalin said representations were received seeking similar assistance for senior citizens, widows, elderly transgender persons and persons with disabilities who rely on monthly social security pensions. Acting on these requests, the Tamil Nadu government has credited a one-time special relief of Rs 2,000 along with the March pension installment.
According to a government release, 29.29 lakh beneficiaries under various social security schemes have received Rs 3,200 each. Officials clarified that this amount includes the existing base monthly pension of Rs 1,200 along with the additional Rs 2,000 special assistance.
Stalin stated that the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to supporting marginalised communities and described it as a response to the trust placed in the government by beneficiaries.
Financial Support for Fishing Communities
The government has also sanctioned relief for fishing families during the annual fishing ban period from April to June. The seasonal prohibition, implemented under statutory marine conservation regulations to protect fish breeding cycles and ensure sustainable fishing, restricts mechanised fishing activities along the coast.
As per the official release, 1,62,900 fishing families will receive Rs 8,000 per family as ban-period assistance to offset income loss during these three months.
Price Support for Nilgiris Tea Farmers
In a separate measure, the government has allocated Rs 8.53 crore as price support for small tea growers in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. The Nilgiris, a प्रमुख hill district known for tea cultivation, has thousands of small farmers dependent on cooperative procurement systems.
Under this initiative, 14,870 tea farmers supplying green tea leaves to 15 cooperative tea factories will receive an additional Rs 2 per kilogram as price support, according to official data.
Fiscal Outlay and Implementation
While the government statement detailed allocations for individual schemes, it did not specify the total combined fiscal outlay for all the announced measures. However, officials indicated that funds have been disbursed through direct benefit transfer mechanisms to ensure timely credit into beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
The Chief Minister’s office confirmed that the special Rs 2,000 assistance has already been credited along with the March pension. No separate schedule has been announced for a second phase of payments, and authorities have indicated that the current relief is structured as a one-time special grant.
With these measures, the Tamil Nadu government has broadened its welfare coverage across pensioners, fishing families and small farmers, reinforcing its focus on targeted financial assistance to economically vulnerable groups.
