New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought President Droupadi Murmu’s approval to prosecute AAP leader and former Delhi minister Satyendar Kumar Jain under Section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, sources told ANI. The move follows evidence provided by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case.
Jain, who is currently in jail, is also facing allegations of running a high-profile extortion racket from Tihar Jail. The CBI has accused him of extorting ₹10 crore from conman Sukash Chandrashekhar between 2018 and 2021 in exchange for protection inside Delhi’s prisons.
In March 2023, the MHA approved a CBI probe into the matter under the Prevention of Corruption (PoC) Act. In February 2024, Delhi LG VK Saxena forwarded the CBI’s request to prosecute Jain under Section 17A of the PoC Act. The MHA granted sanction on March 22, leading to further action against Jain.
Jain, once a key minister in the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government, was arrested in May 2022 in a money laundering case. With the latest prosecution request, his legal troubles continue to mount. The case has sparked political controversy, with the BJP targeting AAP over corruption allegations.
