New Delhi: Washington’s latest trade measure against New Delhi took effect on Wednesday, August 27, with additional tariffs of 25 percent on Indian imports officially coming into force at 9:31 am IST. The fresh duties, announced through a draft order earlier this week, are expected to hit more than USD 48 billion worth of Indian exports to the United States.

This escalation doubles the overall tariff burden on most Indian goods entering the American market, raising it from 25 percent to 50 percent, with only limited exemptions granted. The Trump administration had already imposed an initial round of 25 percent duties on August 7. The second wave of tariffs has been described as a punitive measure linked to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil and military hardware.

The official draft notice issued by the US Department of Homeland Security specified that the new levies would apply to all Indian-origin goods “entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 am EDT, August 27, 2025.”
