West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continues to stand firm against the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state, reiterating her stance during a passionate address at a poll rally in Assam’s Silchar. Banerjee’s fiery remarks underscore her unwavering commitment to resist what she perceives as discriminatory policies, amidst a charged electoral atmosphere.

Addressing the crowd, Banerjee, in a bold assertion, declared that her party, the I.N.D.I.A bloc, would not implement the NRC and CAA if victorious in the elections. She characterized the upcoming election as tumultuous, denouncing it as unprecedentedly tainted by corruption and malpractice. Undeterred by threats, Banerjee expressed defiance against attempts to coerce or intimidate her.

Banerjee’s resolute stance against the NRC and CAA echoes her previous remarks made during a namaz event in Kolkata, where she condemned divisive politics and urged for communal harmony in the wake of the Bhupatinagar incident. She cautioned against succumbing to provocations and underscored the importance of maintaining peace amidst escalating tensions.

In a separate critique, Banerjee lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anti-corruption rhetoric, alleging that the BJP’s promises to combat corruption post-elections are veiled threats aimed at targeting opposition leaders. She accused the BJP of orchestrating a campaign to silence dissent and criticized central agencies like the National Investigative Agency (NIA) for operating without local police coordination in Bhupatinagar.

Banerjee’s dissatisfaction with the NIA’s conduct reflects broader concerns about the erosion of state autonomy and the centralization of power under the BJP government. Her rebuke of PM Modi’s pledge to take stringent actions against corruption post-elections underscores the deep-seated political animosity between the ruling TMC and the BJP.

In response, PM Modi, during a recent rally in Bengal’s Jalpaiguri, sought to portray the opposition as defenders of corruption, contrasting his promises of anti-corruption measures with their purported efforts to shield the corrupt. His vow to take stricter actions against corruption after June 4 underscores the high-stakes nature of the upcoming elections and the BJP’s aggressive electoral strategy in West Bengal.
