Major victory for Bar Vinod Tiwari as GoI withdraws air fare caps on domestic & international sector

Mumbai: In a major victory for consumer activist, Barrister Vinod Tiwari, Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has withdrawn the minimum and maximum caps on Air Fares in domestic and international sector with effect from August 31. The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation on Wednesday issued an order to this effect.

Reacting to the development, Barrister Vinod Tiwari remarked, “On my representation and continued follow up, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India has finally withdrawn the minimum and maximum caps on Air Fares in domestic and international sector from August 31”. 

This means Air Lines will be able to sell Air Tickets in Apex / Economy fares at much lower prices! Apex / Economy fares means Air Tickets booked 20 days in advance which are generally in the category of Non-Refundable Fares! added Barrister Vinod Tiwari 

He further added that, “In last five months, due to faulty orders of the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India air passengers have been forced to shell Rs. 7,000 Crores from needy air travellers who all were forced to buy air tickets in higher caps”.

In its order issued here today, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has stated that its May 21, 2020 order, further modified on September 18, 2021, was regarding fare capping during the calibrated opening of the civil aviation sector in the country.

It further adds that after review of the status of scheduled domestic operations in relation to passenger demand for air travel the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has decided to remove the air fare bands regarding air fares issued on May 21, 2020.
