The Dhangar reservation controversy is heating up in Maharashtra, with growing tensions between the Dhangar community and tribal leaders. The Dhangar community is seeking reservation status from the tribal quota, a move that has faced strong opposition from tribal leaders. This conflict has escalated into protests, hunger strikes, and increased pressure on the state government, particularly with assembly elections on the horizon.
In a bold move, BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar, a prominent leader of the Dhangar community, has announced a statewide roadblock scheduled for Monday. This announcement was made during a press conference, where Padalkar emphasized the community’s demand for reservation without encroaching on the tribal reservation. “Our demand is to give reservation without affecting the reservation of the tribal community,” he stated.
Padalkar’s call for roadblocks comes in response to what he perceives as political maneuvers against the Dhangar community’s rightful claims. “Some MLAs and leaders are consistently speaking against reservation,” he added, noting that they are protesting by blocking water supplies to Mumbai. In light of these provocations, he urged supporters to join in stopping highways at 11 AM on Monday, warning against any political motives behind the opposition to their demands: “If someone is doing politics motivated by political motives, then ‘Abhi nahi to kabhi nahin.'”
The MLA underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “It is a serious issue if the government is taking time to approve the sub-classification.” The Dhangar community has been actively protesting, with hunger strikes taking place in Pandharpur and Latur, demanding the government take a definitive stand on the issue. Padalkar reassured that the roadblocks would be conducted peacefully, aiming to raise awareness rather than incite violence.
Previously, community leaders had expressed optimism, suggesting that “R has become D,” referring to the aspirations for reservation status. However, with delays in the government’s response, frustrations have mounted. The state government has claimed that the term “Dhangad” does not exist within its jurisdiction, a statement Padalkar and his supporters find deeply concerning.
Additionally, the Dhangar community’s struggle has been complicated by legal battles in the High Court, where attempts to secure ST (Scheduled Tribe) category certificates have faced obstacles. “The petition was canceled as the people of the Dhangar tribe removed the certificates of Dhangad,” Padalkar explained, urging the government to issue a government resolution (GR) and provide ST certificates.
As the situation unfolds, the Dhangar community’s resolve appears unwavering. With roadblocks on the horizon, both the government and tribal leaders will need to navigate this delicate situation carefully as the demand for reservation continues to intensify. The eyes of Maharashtra will be on the streets Monday, as the Dhangar community seeks to make their voices heard loud and clear.
