As the Lok Sabha elections progress, a spotlight has been cast on the financial transformations of candidates, particularly in Phase 4. Bharatiya Janata Party’s Murlidhar Kisanrao Mohol from Pune emerged as the candidate with the most significant surge in wealth among the 1,717 contenders in this phase. His wealth skyrocketed by an astonishing 2,161% over the past five years, according to the analysis conducted by the Informed Voter Project (IVP), a non-profit organization dedicated to scrutinizing candidates based on various parameters including assets, education, and criminal records.

Aurangabad’s Bhumare Sandipanrao Asaram from the Shiv Sena also stood out as one of the top-10 wealth accumulators in Phase 4, with a remarkable 190% increase in his assets during the same period.

The IVP report sheds light on the wealth growth patterns across political affiliations. BJP candidates, on average, experienced a staggering 99% increase in wealth, with an average wealth of Rs 19.7 crores. Following closely, the Shiv Sena candidates witnessed a 74% growth rate, boasting an average wealth of Rs 54.5 crores.

However, the report juxtaposes these astronomical wealth increments with the stagnant financial conditions of the ordinary Indian. While the average annual growth rate of wealth for the common citizen remained a mere 0.7% over the past four years, candidates aligned with the ruling NDA alliance saw their wealth surge 26 times faster. On the other hand, candidates associated with the INDIA alliance experienced an 86% lower growth rate compared to NDA candidates but still outpaced the ordinary citizens by a significant margin, growing four times faster.

Beyond financial analyses, the report also delves into the darker aspects of political candidacy, highlighting candidates with significant criminal charges. Shirur’s candidate Adhalrao Dattatrey, from Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party, garnered the highest number of red flags, indicating severe criminal charges including multiple instances of attempted murder and criminal intimidation. Similarly, Shiv Sena’s Chandrakant Khaire accrued 12 red flags for charges including robbery and attempt to cause death.

In addition to wealth and criminal records, the IVP report evaluates the government’s performance in education and Women and Child Development (WCD) sectors. Shockingly, the report reveals that the government failed to fulfill 28% of its education promises and a staggering 59% of WCD commitments, categorizing their performance as ‘low’ or ‘very low.’

As the elections progress, such analyses provide voters with crucial insights into the backgrounds and performances of the candidates, empowering them to make informed decisions at the ballot box.
