Amid rising panic and long queues at petrol pumps, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued a strong appeal to citizens to remain calm and avoid panic buying of petrol, diesel, and fertilisers, clarifying that there is no shortage of essential supplies in the state.
His statement comes as several cities across Maharashtra witness a sudden surge in fuel demand, with people rushing to fill their tanks fearing a possible shortage. Officials have observed that this spike is driven more by fear than actual scarcity, putting unnecessary pressure on the supply chain.
Why Are Long Queues Being Seen?
Over the past few days, multiple areas in the state have reported unusually high demand for fuel. Petrol pumps have seen long lines, and in some cases, temporary disruptions due to sudden bulk buying.
Authorities believe that rumours and uncertainty have triggered this behaviour, leading to what they describe as panic-driven demand rather than real shortage.
The Chief Minister cautioned that such actions can create artificial shortages, disturbing the normal balance between supply and consumption.
Is There Really a Fuel Shortage?
Fadnavis reiterated that Maharashtra has adequate stock of petrol and diesel to meet its monthly requirements. He assured citizens that the supply chain is stable and functioning normally.
The state government has also aligned with the Centre’s position that there is no crisis situation and no need for hoarding.
What About Fertiliser Shortage?
A similar trend has been noticed in the fertiliser sector, especially with DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate), where demand has surged sharply.
Officials reported nearly a 70% increase in consumption, indicating panic buying rather than actual agricultural need. This sudden spike has raised concerns about possible supply disruptions for farmers.
Government’s Warning on Black Marketing
The state has issued a strict warning against black marketing and hoarding of fuel and fertilisers. Authorities have made it clear that strict action will be taken against any petrol pump operators or suppliers found engaging in illegal practices.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that hoarding fertilisers could seriously impact farmers and disrupt agricultural activities. Officials have warned that criminal proceedings may be initiated against those manipulating supply.
