Mumbai : In a strong disciplinary move ahead of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expelled 40 of its members, including leaders and workers, across 37 constituencies on Tuesday. This action follows a wave of rebellion within the party, where several leaders filed their nominations as independent candidates after being denied tickets for the upcoming elections.
The expulsion comes a day after the Election Commission’s deadline for the withdrawal of nominations on November 4, 2024. Many BJP leaders, discontented by the party’s decision to not nominate them, chose to contest as independents, challenging the party’s official candidates. In response, senior BJP leaders took active steps to convince these rebels to reconsider their nominations and withdraw their candidacies before the deadline.
While a number of rebels complied and withdrew their nominations, a substantial group of party members remained resolute, refusing to step down from the race. This defiance led to the party’s decision to expel those who refused to fall in line, sending a strong message that disciplinary actions would be taken against anyone undermining the party’s unity and election strategy.
BJP insiders stated that the expulsions were a necessary step to maintain discipline within the party and ensure a united front during the elections. The party leadership emphasized that these actions were essential for the party’s credibility and to avoid any fragmentation that could potentially affect its prospects in the polls.
The decision to expel the rebels has also raised questions about the intra-party dynamics in the BJP, with many of the expelled members being seasoned politicians who have held significant positions within the party. Their expulsion marks a sharp break in the party’s relations with them and highlights the growing tensions within political ranks as the elections near.
As the polling day approaches, the BJP is focusing on consolidating its support base and ensuring that the party’s candidates are united in their fight for the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. The expulsions reflect the BJP’s no-tolerance approach towards indiscipline, reinforcing the party’s strategy to eliminate any distractions ahead of the crucial polls.
