The Government of Maharashtra has decided to make permits mandatory for e-rickshaws and e-bikes used for passenger transport, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced on Friday.
The decision comes as the number of electric vehicles operating in the passenger transport sector has increased rapidly across the state.
According to the minister, all such vehicles will now be required to register with the Maharashtra Transport Department and obtain valid permits before carrying passengers commercially.
Temporary Suspension On New Auto And Taxi Permits
The announcement comes at a time when the process of issuing new permits for auto-rickshaws and taxis in the state has been temporarily suspended for the past two days.
While traditional vehicles already require permits to operate, electric rickshaws were earlier not required to obtain a separate permit for passenger transport.
However, the state government has now decided to bring electric vehicles under the same regulatory framework.
Rule Based On Central Government Notification
Sarnaik said the decision follows the guidelines issued by the Government of India through a notification dated June 30, 2016, which allows states to regulate electric passenger vehicles.
The move aims to ensure uniform regulations for all types of passenger transport vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, taxis and electric rickshaws.
Officials say the decision is also intended to improve transparency in the transport sector and prevent irregular operations.
Single-Window System Planned For Permit Applications
To simplify the process, the Transport Department is preparing to introduce a single-window system for permit applications.
Under the proposed system, the entire process — including application submission, document verification and approval — will be handled through a single platform.
Authorities believe this will make it easier for vehicle owners to obtain permits while ensuring better regulatory oversight.
Govt Says Move Will Bring Discipline In Transport Sector
The Transport Minister said that making permits compulsory for all passenger transport vehicles will help prevent misuse and irregularities in the sector.
He expressed confidence that the new rule will bring greater discipline to the passenger transport system and ensure safer and more regulated services for commuters across Maharashtra.
