Maharashtra CM asks Centre to revoke its order of putting cap on buying of onion by traders

@the_news_21

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has asked the central government to revoke its order of putting a cap on buying of onion by the traders saying the decision has adversely affected the market leading to the crop’s price rise. In a letter to Union Minister for Consumer Protection, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal, Thackeray said in view of Centre’s order of limiting the buying of the crop, the onion traders in APMC have stopped buying onions from farmers affecting the supply chain.

He said the traders should be allowed to buy 1500 metric tonnes of the crop which is currently capped at 25 metric tonnes by the centre under the Essential Commodities Act. On 23 October 2020, the Union Government amended the Control Order in the Essential Commodities Act to restrict the storage of upto 25 MT for wholesale onion traders and up to 2 MT for retail onion traders.
