Mumbai: The Maharashtra Assembly on Wednesday suspended Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Asim Azmi until the end of the ongoing Budget Session over his controversial remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The decision, which came amid loud protests, saw the ruling Mahayuti coalition accuse Azmi of “treason.”

A proposal for his suspension was tabled in the Assembly following a massive uproar from the ruling benches, with members demanding strict action against Azmi for his statements. The controversy erupted after Azmi’s comments on Aurangzeb led to disruptions in both Houses of the Maharashtra legislature, forcing an adjournment on Tuesday.

Defending himself, Azmi took to X to clarify that his words had been “misinterpreted” and that he had no intention of disrespecting Shivaji Maharaj or Sambhaji Maharaj. “Whatever I said about Aurangzeb has been stated by historians and writers. I did not insult any national icons. However, if anyone was hurt by my remarks, I take them back,” he wrote. Azmi further claimed that the issue was being politicized and warned that if anything happened to him or his family, the Maharashtra government would be responsible.

The BJP seized the moment to attack opposition parties, alleging a conspiracy to undermine Sanatan Dharma. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led the charge in both the Assembly and Legislative Council, accusing Azmi of repeatedly making “objectionable comments” about Shivaji Maharaj. Shinde described Aurangzeb as a ‘demon’ and argued that even true Muslims would not support those glorifying him.

Shinde also pointed out Aurangzeb’s atrocities, including the execution of Sambhaji Maharaj and the demolition of the Kashi Vishveshwar temple. Calling for Azmi’s permanent removal, he labeled him a “traitor” and asserted that he had “no place in the House.”
