Mumbai: Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Tuesday ordered the reopening of the probe against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP Unmesh Patil from who had assaulted a former army man four years ago.

Deshmukh said in 2016, ex-army man Sonu Mahajan was attacked by Patil and his supporters. Patil was a MLA at that time, and the police did not even register a First Investigation Report (FIR) as BJP was in power in the state then.

The victim’s name is Sonu Mahajan from Chalisgaon. He was living in a rented house and was working as a security officer in a company. On June 2, 2016, Mahajan was in the house with his family as BJP MLA Unmesh Patil entered the house with some goons and some women. On the order of Patil the goons started attacking him with swords after which Mahajan was seriously injured.

After attacking Mahajan and his family, Patil and his accomplices fled from the scen3 as the neighbors gathered. After the incident, Mahajan approached the police. However, no complaint was lodged by the Chalisgaon police. The FIR was only lodged after Mahajan was admitted to the hospital after sustaining multiple injuries.

Even after this, a complaint was lodged with the Superintendent of Police of Jalgaon district but he also did not take any action. Chalisgaon police, on the other hand, filed a case against Mahajan, a former soldier, to protect the accused.

Mahajan filed a petition in the Aurangabad Bench of the Mumbai High Court after it became clear that the police were not taking action due to political pressure. Mahajan filed a petition in the Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court. HC directed police to register a FIR in the matter.  The police then recorded the statement of Sonu Mahajan’s wife. The BJP leader Unmesh Patil has been directly accused.

Manisha Mahajan has demanded a fresh and fair investigation of the case in a request made by her. “In 2016, no action was taken against the BJP leaders Unmesh Patil, who stayed away from action only due to his political pressure, she further added on her statement.”

Taking note of her statement, Home Minister Deshmukh has promised to reopen the case and a fair investigation will be conducted against Unmesh Patil, who had beaten up a former soldier four years ago.

“The FIR was registered in 2019. In the last four-five days, I received several memorandums on this issue. So, I have ordered the Jalgaon Superintendent of Police to probe the matter immediately,” said Maharashtra Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh.
