The Madras High Court has given the green light for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow in Coimbatore on March 18, overriding the district police’s denial of permission. However, certain conditions have been imposed by the court for the procession to proceed.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court directed the Coimbatore Police to allow a 4-kilometer roadshow during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the city, laying out specific conditions.

The roadshow forms a crucial part of Prime Minister Modi’s pre-election itinerary in South India. The BJP had sought permission for a 3.6-kilometer roadshow in the industrial-textile hub.

Security concerns, Coimbatore’s history of communal tensions, and potential disruptions, especially during ongoing student examinations, were cited as reasons for denying permission.

Notably, the climax of the Prime Minister’s roadshow is slated to occur at RS Puram, a location marred by the 1998 serial blasts. Additionally, given Coimbatore’s communal sensitivity, political parties or groups are typically not granted permission for roadshows.

Authorities also highlighted the presence of schools along the planned route, with public examinations scheduled for March 18 and 19, adding to concerns about potential disruptions.
