Tianjin: US President Donald Trump stirred international attention on Friday with a striking statement hinting at a sharp decline in relations between Washington, New Delhi, and Moscow. Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!” The comment followed the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping were seen together, exchanging warm greetings and discussions.

The SCO Summit, hosted by Xi Jinping, marked a significant display of camaraderie between India, Russia, and China, with many experts interpreting the gathering as a step toward a multipolar world order amid rising trade tensions with the US.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) chose not to comment directly on Trump’s post. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during the weekly briefing, “We don’t have anything to comment on Trump’s post at this point.”

Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton also weighed in, noting that Trump’s once-close personal bond with Modi had diminished. “Trump had a very good relationship personally with Modi. I think that’s gone now, and it’s a lesson to everybody,” Bolton said, warning that personal relationships alone cannot shield nations from policy conflicts.

The backdrop of Trump’s remarks includes escalating US-India tensions over tariffs. The Trump administration recently imposed 25% base tariffs plus an additional 25% levy on India, citing concerns over the country’s continued purchase of Russian oil. India has strongly rejected claims of profiteering, asserting that buying affordable Russian crude serves its national interest.

Observers note that the SCO encounter, combined with Trump’s aggressive trade policies toward both India and China, has accelerated closer ties among India, Russia, and China. PM Modi’s first visit to China in seven years underscored this shift, with Modi receiving a notably warm welcome in Tianjin. During bilateral talks, Modi and Xi agreed to prioritize friendship over rivalry, resolve border disputes, and strengthen trade relations. Xi highlighted the importance of cooperation, saying it was “vital to be friends, a good neighbour, and the dragon and the elephant to come together.”
