Lallu Singh, the sitting BJP MP from Ayodhya, has courted controversy by becoming the latest leader from the ruling party to call for winning a two-thirds majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to enable amending the Constitution.
Singh made these remarks at a public meeting in Milkipur assembly constituency on April 13, saying that while 272 seats are enough to form government, amending the Constitution requires over two-thirds or 365-366 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha.
“A government formed with 272 seats cannot amend the Constitution. For that, or even if a new Constitution is to be made, there is a need of over two-thirds majority,” Singh can be heard saying in a video that has gone viral on social media.
Singh, who is seeking re-election from Ayodhya, became the third BJP leader in the last two months to raise the need for a two-thirds majority, after Union Ministers Giriraj Singh and Narendra Singh Tomar made similar statements.
The opposition has slammed the BJP for showing its alleged anti-Constitutional intentions, while constitutional experts have warned that such a majority could put democratic rights and checks and balances at risk.
Singh, a five-term former MLA from Ayodhya, is considered a prominent Hindutva voice given the temple town’s importance in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement spearheaded by the BJP and its ideological parent RSS.
