Delhi: In a significant breakthrough that promises to restore normalcy to the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla successfully brokered peace between the government and Opposition after days of relentless disruptions over the contentious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Continuous protests had brought the Winter Session to a standstill, but an all-party meeting convened by the Speaker finally paved the way for long-pending national discussions.
During the meeting, attended by senior leaders from across the political spectrum, consensus was reached to resume parliamentary business beginning Monday (December 8). The House will first take up a special discussion marking the historic 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to open the debate at noon. This will be followed by an extensive 10-hour deliberation on electoral reforms on Tuesday (December 9), during which concerns related to the SIR process are expected to be subsumed and addressed.
Sources within Parliament described the meeting as “constructive and solution-oriented,” with the Speaker personally engaging leaders to identify a compromise. Earlier in the day, Congress chief whip K. Suresh confirmed that the Opposition’s plea for a dedicated debate on SIR had been integrated into the broader discussion on electoral reforms, allowing Members of Parliament to raise issues related to the ongoing exercise in 12 states and Union Territories.
The government, represented by senior minister Kiren Rijiju, maintained its stand that the SIR was an administrative matter under the Election Commission and did not warrant a separate debate. However, Rijiju agreed to a comprehensive discussion on electoral improvements—a domain where both the government and Parliament hold authority—thus clearing the way for a mutually acceptable solution.
