In a significant development in the Kurla bus tragedy case, the Bombay High Court on Monday granted bail to bus driver Sanjay More, who was behind the wheel during the deadly accident that killed nine people in December 2024.
Bail Granted After Over a Year in Custody
The bench of Justice RM Joshi allowed the bail plea, noting that More had already spent over a year in custody.
His lawyers, Advait Shukla and Amandeep Singh Sra, argued that the prolonged detention and delay in trial justified granting bail.
Defence Challenges Serious Charges
The defence strongly opposed the application of culpable homicide not amounting to murder charges.
They argued that:
- More was an experienced driver
- He had received only three days of training on the electric bus
- At most, the case amounted to rash and negligent driving
According to them, the circumstances did not justify invoking such serious charges.
Trial Delays Cited
The court also took into account delays in the trial process.
Although charges were framed by a sessions court on October 13, 2025, and summons were issued to witnesses in December, prosecution witnesses have reportedly been absent for the past two months, slowing down proceedings.
Case Still Ongoing
More has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the case will continue in the trial court.
The High Court’s decision to grant bail does not affect the merits of the case but provides temporary relief to the accused as the legal process continues.
A Case That Shocked Mumbai
The Kurla crash had sparked widespread outrage due to the scale of damage and loss of life.
With the driver now out on bail, the focus shifts back to the trial, which is expected to determine accountability in one of Mumbai’s most tragic road incidents.
