Kerala Cabinet Talks Begin After UDF’s Massive Election Victory, Congress Starts Alliance Consultations

UDF Begins Internal Discussions Over Ministerial Berths

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress-led United Democratic Front has begun discussions on cabinet formation after securing a decisive victory in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections and ending the Left Democratic Front’s long rule in the state.

Senior Congress leader Sunny Joseph said consultations regarding ministerial positions and power-sharing arrangements among alliance partners are currently underway and final decisions would be announced only after detailed discussions.

“Discussions regarding ministerial positions will be held individually and collectively with leaders of constituent parties. An appropriate decision will be announced after the discussions,” he said while speaking in Thiruvananthapuram.

Congress-Led Alliance Returns To Power In Kerala

The UDF registered a major political comeback in Kerala after winning 102 seats in the Assembly elections held in April 2026.

The landslide mandate brought an end to more than a decade of rule by the Left Democratic Front and marked one of the Congress alliance’s biggest victories in the state in recent years.

The strong performance has now intensified negotiations within the coalition over cabinet representation and allocation of key ministries among alliance partners.

Political observers believe discussions over balancing regional, caste and party interests are likely to play an important role in finalising the new ministry.

Delay Over Chief Minister Selection Triggered Speculation

The formation of the new government was preceded by days of uncertainty over the Congress party’s choice for Chief Minister.

The Congress high command reportedly took more than 10 days to finalise the leadership decision amid internal consultations and political discussions.

Eventually, senior Congress leader V. D. Satheesan was officially announced as the next Chief Minister during a press conference held at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in New Delhi.

The delay had sparked widespread speculation regarding possible differences within the party leadership before consensus was reached.

Swearing-In Ceremony Likely On Monday

According to reports, the swearing-in ceremony of the new Kerala government is expected to take place at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, discussions among UDF allies are expected to continue over the coming days as the coalition works to finalise the structure of the new cabinet and distribution of ministerial responsibilities.

The political transition is being closely watched as the Congress-led alliance prepares to return to power in Kerala after years in opposition.
