Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar Hits Back at Goa CM Over Mahadayi Row: “Let Them Try to Stop Us”

Bengaluru: In a sharp escalation of the ongoing Mahadayi river water dispute, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has launched a scathing counter to recent remarks by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. Shivakumar accused the Goa CM of lacking understanding of inter-state relations, stating, “I think Goa CM has lost his mental balance because he doesn’t know what kind of inter-state relationship should exist.”

The remarks come amid renewed tensions over Karnataka’s proposed Mahadayi project, which involves diverting water from the Mahadayi river for drinking and irrigation purposes in northern Karnataka districts. Goa has long opposed the move, claiming it will affect the state’s water flow and ecological balance.

Brushing aside Goa’s objections, Shivakumar added defiantly, “I am going to start the work. Let them stop it.”

The controversial project has sparked political and legal battles between Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra for years. The recent clearance given to Karnataka by the Central Water Commission (CWC) has rekindled the dispute, prompting fresh reactions from leaders on both sides.
