Fresh signs of internal dissent have surfaced within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after senior party MP Kalyan Banerjee publicly warned that he would resign from the party if leaders who had previously left the organisation were allowed to return.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Banerjee urged West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee to make a clear public commitment that former members who deserted the party would not be reinducted.“I want Mamata Banerjee to say this in public that those who have left the party won’t be taken back. If they are taken back, then I will leave the party. Those who have left are free to stay wherever they are,” Kalyan Banerjee said.
Raises Concerns Over Party Stability
The TMC MP also expressed concern over the party’s political future, claiming that merely securing a majority in the Assembly would not necessarily guarantee that the party could remain in power.
According to Banerjee, there was a possibility that elected legislators could be lured away after the election, potentially altering the final outcome despite a strong mandate.“Whatever has happened is right. Even if Didi got over 200 MLAs, she would fail to form the government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would have formed the government as they would have bought the TMC MLAs with crores of rupees,” he alleged.
Kunal Ghosh Supports Kalyan Banerjee’s Stand
Senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh backed Banerjee’s remarks, saying the MP’s comments reflected the emotions of party workers during a politically sensitive period.
Ghosh said workers who remained loyal to the party during difficult times would be disappointed if leaders who had left were welcomed back.“At this crisis, those who have left shouldn’t have gone. They should think about the sentiments of the party workers. What Kalyan Banerjee had said is correct,” Ghosh said.
Fresh Debate Over TMC’s Internal Unity
The remarks have reignited discussions over internal unity within the Trinamool Congress ahead of crucial political battles in West Bengal. While the party leadership has not officially responded to Kalyan Banerjee’s statement, his warning has intensified speculation over the future of leaders who had previously exited the party.
The development comes amid continuing political competition between the TMC and the BJP, with party loyalty and defections expected to remain key issues in the state’s political landscape.
