New Delhi: In a significant development, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, one of the key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is being extradited to India from the United States. A special chartered flight carrying the 64-year-old Canadian-American national of Pakistani origin left the U.S. on Wednesday, April 9, marking a decisive step in India’s long fight for justice following the 2008 attacks that killed 166 people.

Rana, who had exhausted all legal avenues to block his extradition, is expected to land in New Delhi later today. Once he arrives, he will be taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which, along with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), has been coordinating the extradition. Rana is set to be presented before a Delhi court soon after his arrival.

The accused faces multiple serious charges, including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Government of India, murder, forgery, and violations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. While the Mumbai Police have yet to receive an official communication regarding his transfer, authorities in New Delhi are making necessary preparations to ensure the legal proceedings move forward smoothly.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded the extradition as a major diplomatic win for India. “Tahawwur Rana’s extradition is a big success of Prime Minister Modi’s diplomacy,” he said, calling it a pivotal moment for the government and a step closer to justice for the victims of the 26/11 attacks.
