Mumbai: Mumbai’s Khar Police have issued a summons to comedian Kunal Kamra over his controversial remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. As Kamra is currently outside Maharashtra, the summons was also sent via WhatsApp, instructing him to appear for questioning at 11 AM regarding the ongoing investigation.

This development follows Kamra’s firm refusal to apologise for his remarks, which sparked political outrage and vandalism at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai. Reacting to the controversy, Kamra took to social media to defend his stance, stating that an entertainment venue should not be held accountable for a comedian’s words.

“A venue is merely a platform for performances. It does not control or dictate what I say. Neither does any political party. Attacking a venue because of a joke is as senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes because you didn’t like the butter chicken you were served,” Kamra remarked in his statement.

The comedian also responded to threats from political leaders, emphasizing that his right to freedom of speech remains intact regardless of their discontent. “Our right to free speech is not just for praising the powerful. Your inability to take a joke does not alter my rights. As far as I know, it is not illegal to poke fun at politicians or the circus that is our political system,” he asserted.

Kamra further clarified that he is willing to cooperate with the authorities but questioned whether the law would be applied fairly. He called out the vandalism at the comedy club, asking if those responsible would also face action.

“I am open to any lawful investigation, but will those who believe vandalism is the right response to a joke also be held accountable?” Kamra questioned.
