New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of orchestrating the sudden partnerships of Airtel and Reliance Jio with Elon Musk’s Starlink, claiming the move aims to curry favor with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh wrote, “Within literally 12 hours both Airtel and Jio have announced partnerships with Starlink, seemingly overcoming all their objections to its entry into India… It is abundantly clear that these partnerships have been orchestrated by none other than the PM himself to buy goodwill with President Trump through Starlink’s owner Elon Musk. But many questions remain…”

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio and Airtel had previously opposed Starlink’s entry into India, citing regulatory concerns. However, their abrupt shift in stance has sparked political controversy.

Ramesh also questioned the national security implications of these deals, asking whether Starlink or its Indian partners would control connectivity in critical situations. He further demanded clarity on whether other satellite-based connectivity providers would be allowed into the Indian market and under what terms.
