IRCTC Issues Advisory on Possible Meal Disruptions Amid LPG Shortage, Directs Stations to Stock Ready-To-Eat Food

Passengers travelling on Indian Railways may face temporary disruptions in onboard meal services as the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has issued an advisory warning about potential challenges linked to LPG supply shortages.

In a notice issued on March 10, IRCTC directed catering operators across railway stations to prepare for possible disruptions in cooking fuel availability while ensuring passengers continue to receive food services.

Railway officials said passengers who have pre-booked meals while reserving their train tickets will receive refunds if catering services are affected.

Why Did IRCTC Issue This Advisory?

IRCTC sent instructions to operators managing Food Plazas, Refreshment Rooms and Jan Ahaars across railway stations.

The advisory asked them to remain prepared in case LPG supply interruptions affect cooking operations in railway kitchens.

“To maintain seamless operations, you are hereby directed to implement the following measures immediately,” the instruction said.

The railway catering body stressed that food services for passengers must continue even if logistical challenges arise.

Ready-To-Eat Food Stock Made Mandatory

As part of the precautionary measures, IRCTC directed catering units to maintain sufficient stock of Ready-To-Eat (RTE) food items.

This means outlets must store packaged meals that can be served without cooking if LPG supplies are disrupted.

“In addition to standard PAD and other food items, you are required to maintain a sufficient inventory of Ready-To-Eat food items to meet passenger demand,” the advisory stated.

Officials said the step is aimed at ensuring passengers do not face inconvenience if kitchens cannot prepare fresh meals.

Is the West Asia Conflict Affecting LPG Supply?

The advisory comes amid rising concerns about fuel supply disruptions due to tensions in West Asia.

A significant portion of global energy supplies moves through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route.

Any instability in the region can affect shipping and supply chains, including commercial LPG used in railway kitchens.

17 Lakh Meals Served Daily on Trains

Railway officials said the scale of catering operations is massive.

Meals served onboard trains are prepared at IRCTC’s base kitchen network, which supplies food to trains through pantry cars and onboard catering services.

According to railway estimates, around 17 lakh meals are served to passengers every day through this system.

“If there is any disruption in LPG availability, it will directly affect meal preparation and supply to trains,” a railway official said.

What Happens to Passengers Who Pre-Booked Meals?

Authorities clarified that passengers who have pre-booked meals during ticket reservation will not lose their money.

If catering services are interrupted due to LPG shortages, IRCTC will issue refunds for the meal charges, officials confirmed.

The railway catering body said it is working to ensure that passenger services continue smoothly despite supply challenges.
