Delhi: Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu informed the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session that IndiGo’s flight operations are gradually stabilising following a week-long disruption that affected thousands of passengers nationwide. Speaking in the House, Naidu emphasised that the government is committed to enforcing accountability for the operational failures.
“The disruption caused by IndiGo’s operational lapses is now being addressed, and accountability will be ensured,” he said, stressing that no airline, regardless of its size, will be allowed to mistreat passengers due to poor planning or non-compliance with statutory rules. The minister added that aviation safety remains “completely non-negotiable” and that the government will strictly enforce all safety norms.
Naidu highlighted that IndiGo has been directed to restructure its capacity and ensure full regulatory compliance before scaling up operations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already issued show-cause notices to the airline’s senior leadership and launched a detailed investigation, with potential action under the Aircraft Act and related regulations.
India’s largest domestic carrier, IndiGo, operates about 2,200 daily flights under the winter schedule, but more than 4,500 flights have been cancelled since December 2. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai were the worst affected cities. To manage disruptions, the government has decided to curtail some of IndiGo’s winter flights and reassign routes to other operators, potentially reducing at least 100 flights per day.
The cancellations were largely due to IndiGo’s failure to implement the second phase of revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), which took effect in November to reduce pilot fatigue amid reported crew shortages. While the DGCA temporarily relaxed certain roster norms to ease operational pressure, pilot associations have raised concerns about passenger safety.
