Mumbai: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Uran has reached a historic milestone with the inauguration of its expanded container cargo terminal, propelling India to the forefront of global shipping. With the expansion, JNPA has become the first port in the country to cross the 10 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity mark, solidifying Maharashtra’s position as a major hub for international trade and logistics.

At the heart of this achievement is the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT), operated by PSA India. The completion of Phase II has boosted its handling capacity to an impressive 4.8 million TEUs. The terminal spans a vast 200-hectare container yard and boasts over two kilometres of quay length, outfitted with some of the most advanced port handling equipment in Asia.

Operational efficiency is enhanced by 24 quay cranes, 72 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and several rail-mounted gantry cranes, enabling seamless cargo movement between ships and shore. Six dedicated rail sidings further strengthen multi-modal connectivity, while deep-draft berths accommodate the world’s largest container vessels carrying up to 18,000 TEUs. These upgrades significantly enhance India’s competitiveness in global shipping.

Security and processing efficiency have also been prioritized. The port’s gate complex, equipped with eight automated entry and exit lanes, integrates paperless transactions, weighbridges, and radiation detection systems, ensuring safe and swift cargo handling.

Sustainability forms a core focus of the terminal’s operations. Currently running on 60% renewable energy, the facility aims for full 100% green energy usage in the coming years. The terminal also features India’s first fully green operational model, including solar power, rainwater harvesting, eco-friendly cargo handling, and plans to replace diesel trucks with electric vehicles.

Smart operations and technology-driven systems further enhance productivity. Real-time truck scheduling, centralized parking plazas, and dedicated empty-container yards reduce turnaround time, optimize logistics, and improve overall trade efficiency.
