India’s Active Covid-19 Cases Rise to 6,815; Experts Urge Caution, Not Panic

Mumbai: India has reported a steady uptick in Covid-19 cases, with the active case count reaching 6,815 after 324 new infections were recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday. During the same period, three deaths were confirmed—one each from Delhi, Jharkhand, and Kerala.

Health officials said the deceased included a 44-year-old man with a history of hypertension and hypothyroidism, while the other two victims were senior citizens with chronic respiratory conditions and other comorbidities.

The recent spike in cases is being attributed to the emergence of newer subvariants such as LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1, which are reportedly more transmissible but not necessarily more lethal. Despite the rise, health experts have advised against launching a mass booster vaccination drive.

“Given the high levels of hybrid immunity due to previous infections and vaccination, there is no immediate need for widespread booster doses,” experts said, recommending instead that vulnerable groups—elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic illnesses—be prioritized for protection.

The Union Health Ministry has issued advisories to states and union territories to remain vigilant and prepared, urging hospitals to maintain readiness in case of a further surge.

Doctors and medical bodies, including the Indian Medical Association, have reiterated the importance of Covid-appropriate behavior, including mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded spaces, especially for at-risk individuals.

They also warned the public to distinguish between seasonal viral fevers and Covid-19, as both share symptoms like fever, fatigue, and breathing difficulties. Anyone experiencing worsening symptoms is advised to seek immediate medical attention.
