India’s Active COVID-19 Cases Rise to 2,710; Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi Among Worst-Hit States

New Delhi: India has reported an uptick in active COVID-19 cases, reaching 2,710 as of May 30, 2025, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The surge is being closely monitored by the Centre, especially in states like Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Gujarat, which are witnessing a notable rise in new infections.

Kerala leads the state-wise tally with 1,147 active cases, adding 227 new infections recently. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has reassured citizens that “there is no reason for alarm,” noting that most cases are mild and concentrated in districts like Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha. The Omicron JN variant LF7, previously identified in Southeast Asia, has been found in the state, though serious cases remain rare.

Maharashtra follows with 424 active cases and 84 new cases reported in a day, bringing its total for the year to 681. A detailed report from the Public Health Department states that most cases are mild. Active cases are reported from Mumbai (32), Thane district (2), Thane Municipal Corporation (14), and other regions including Raigad, Nashik, and Pune. 165 patients have successfully recovered, while 467 cases remain active.

In Delhi, 56 new cases were confirmed, raising the city’s active caseload to 294. West Bengal saw a rise with 59 new infections, bringing its total to 116, and Gujarat reported 223 active cases.

In Rajasthan, 54 new cases were logged, along with one death, attributed to pre-existing comorbidities, notably tuberculosis. Meanwhile, in Karnataka, a 63-year-old man succumbed to the virus in Mysuru after being hospitalized since May 15. The man passed away on May 25, with doctors citing septic shock, multiple organ dysfunction, acute kidney injury, COVID pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome as the causes. This marks the third COVID-related death in the state this year.

In Mizoram, two new COVID-19 cases were reported after a gap of seven months, with both patients under treatment at Zoram Medical College and Hospital. The state had last reported a case in October 2024, affecting 73 individuals.

Union Minister for Health and AYUSH Prataprao Jadhav stated, “The Centre is carefully monitoring the rising cases and is prepared for any developments. Health and AYUSH ministries are coordinating closely with states.”

The Health Minister emphasized that the currently circulating variant resembles common flu symptoms, with only one child hospitalized due to the Omicron variant, though not seriously ill. “There is no major spread currently, but we advise continued caution and routine health measures,” the ministry stated.
