Trinidad and Tobago: In a moment that blended diplomacy with a dash of humour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a memorable quip during his address to the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago as part of his ongoing tour of the Caribbean. While speaking about the deep cultural ties and people-to-people connection between India and the Caribbean nation, Modi brought up a subject close to the hearts of both countries—cricket.
Lauding the legacy of West Indies cricket, Modi acknowledged the historical dominance of the Caribbean side during the 1970s and 1980s, a golden era when they were widely feared and respected across the cricketing world. Referring to legends like Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Michael Holding, and Joel Garner, Modi said their influence on the game extended well beyond the Caribbean, including to India.
However, it was his witty remark that drew smiles in the House: “Indians are among the most passionate fans of the West Indies cricket team. We cheer for them with all our heart—except when they’re playing against India.”
The remark was met with laughter and applause, striking a chord with the cricket-loving nation and showcasing the Prime Minister’s lighter side.
PM Modi also paid homage to modern West Indian cricket icons like Brian Lara, Kieron Pollard, and Dwayne Bravo, noting how the sport continues to connect both nations beyond boundaries.
