Mumbai: Indian Railways has formally notified a revision in passenger train fares, introducing a modest increase across several categories of long-distance travel with effect from December 26, 2025. The fare revision applies only to tickets booked on or after the effective date, ensuring that passengers who have already purchased tickets will not face any additional charges, even if their journey takes place later.
According to the Railway Ministry, the latest revision is aimed at striking a balance between keeping travel affordable for passengers and ensuring the financial sustainability of railway operations. This marks the second fare adjustment in 2025, following an earlier revision implemented in July.
Under the new structure, suburban train services and all types of season tickets—both suburban and non-suburban—remain completely untouched. The ministry has also ensured protection for short-distance travellers by keeping fares unchanged for second-class ordinary journeys up to 215 kilometres.
For ordinary non-suburban second-class travel beyond 215 km, fares have been increased in a graded manner. Passengers travelling between 216 km and 750 km will pay Rs 5 extra, while those covering longer distances will see step-wise increases of Rs 10, Rs 15, and up to Rs 20, depending on the journey length. In sleeper class ordinary and first-class ordinary services, fares have been uniformly increased by 1 paise per kilometre for non-suburban routes.
Mail and express trains will see a slightly higher adjustment, with a 2 paise per kilometre increase across both non-AC and AC classes. This applies to sleeper, AC chair car, AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier and AC first class coaches. Railway officials pointed out that for a typical 500 km journey in a non-AC mail or express train, the additional burden on passengers would be around Rs 10.
The revised fare structure also extends to premium and special train services. Trains such as Rajdhani, Tejas Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Gatimaan, Garib Rath, Antyodaya, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, Mahamana and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail will all operate with updated basic fares aligned with the new class-wise revisions.
Indian Railways has instructed stations to update displayed fare charts to reflect the revised pricing from December 26.
