Jewar: In a significant push towards making India a global semiconductor hub, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday announced that the Union Cabinet has approved the country’s sixth semiconductor manufacturing unit, to be set up in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. The upcoming facility will be established under the India Semiconductor Mission, which is a key component of the government’s vision for a self-reliant tech ecosystem.

“This will be a super-advanced unit and marks another major milestone for the semiconductor ecosystem in India. It is a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn,” Vaishnaw said during the press briefing. “Under the India Semiconductor Mission, five units have already been approved, and rapid construction work is underway at all those sites. Production at one of the units will commence this year,” he added.

The announcement comes at a time when the demand for semiconductor chips is soaring globally, and India is positioning itself as a strategic manufacturing destination to reduce dependency on imports and become a key player in the global chip supply chain.

The Jewar unit, located close to the Noida International Airport, is expected to significantly boost the region’s economic development and create thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities. With Foxconn — a major global electronics contract manufacturer — and Indian IT giant HCL collaborating, the facility is projected to bring world-class expertise and cutting-edge technology to India’s growing semiconductor sector.

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) was launched in 2021 with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore to attract leading global players and domestic innovators to invest in chip design, manufacturing, and assembly in India.
