India Overtakes Pakistan in Nuclear Arsenal with 180 Warheads: SIPRI Report

New Delhi: India has officially surpassed Pakistan in the number of nuclear warheads, according to the latest yearbook by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The report reveals that as of 2025, India holds 180 nuclear warheads, up from 172 in 2024, while Pakistan’s stockpile remains unchanged at 170.

These warheads are part of the countries’ respective stockpiles and are available for operational deployment. India’s growth marks a strategic shift in the regional balance of power, as New Delhi continues to bolster its nuclear deterrence capabilities.

SIPRI’s assessment attributes India’s increase to a steady expansion of its nuclear arsenal and continued investment in advanced delivery systems. These include canisterised missiles capable of carrying multiple warheads and remaining mated during peacetime, enhancing readiness and survivability.

In contrast, Pakistan maintained its focus on refining its delivery systems and accumulating fissile material. However, its overall warhead count has remained static over the past year.

The report also highlights India’s comprehensive strategy to diversify its nuclear delivery platforms across land, air, and sea, thus achieving a more robust and survivable second-strike capability. Pakistan, though advancing, still lags in establishing a fully credible triad.
