India Expresses Concern Over Attack Near UAE Nuclear Facility
India on Monday sharply reacted to the drone strike reported near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates, describing the incident as a serious and dangerous escalation amid growing instability in the Gulf region.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi said it was deeply worried by the attack and stressed that targeting sensitive nuclear infrastructure posed major risks to regional peace and security.
India also urged all sides involved in the conflict to avoid further escalation and return to diplomatic engagement and dialogue.
Fire Reported Near Barakah Nuclear Plant After Drone Strike
Authorities in Abu Dhabi confirmed that a fire broke out near the outer perimeter of the Barakah nuclear facility following a drone-related incident on Sunday.
Emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the site and managed to contain the blaze. Officials stated that there were no casualties and no damage to radiological safety systems at the plant.
The UAE government said all precautionary protocols were activated and reassured the public that the situation remained fully under control.
Rising Gulf Tensions Trigger International Concern
The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions across the Middle East, particularly amid the ongoing confrontation involving the United States and Iran.
While no organisation has officially claimed responsibility for the drone strike, suspicions have intensified due to previous attacks on energy and strategic infrastructure in the Gulf region.
The UAE has previously accused Iran-backed elements of carrying out attacks targeting economic and energy installations since the escalation of conflict in the region earlier this year. However, Emirati authorities have not publicly assigned blame in the latest incident.
Strategic Nuclear Facility Plays Key Role In UAE Energy Sector
The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, operational since 2020, is considered one of the UAE’s most significant strategic infrastructure projects. Located in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region near the borders of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, the facility supplies nearly one-fourth of the UAE’s electricity requirements.
Security experts say any attack near nuclear infrastructure raises global concerns due to the potential environmental and geopolitical consequences, even when radiation systems remain unaffected.
