New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday underscored the strength of India-US ties, responding to US President Donald Trump’s recent comment that the two leaders would “always be friends.”

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

Trump, while speaking to ANI earlier, reaffirmed his personal rapport with Modi and described India-US ties as “a very special relationship.” “I always will. I’ll always be friends with (PM) Modi. He’s a great Prime Minister. I’ll always be friends, but I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a very special relationship. There is nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion,” Trump remarked.

The Ministry of External Affairs also emphasized the enduring importance of the bilateral relationship. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during his weekly briefing, “This relationship between the United States and India is very important for us. Both our countries share a comprehensive global strategic partnership, which is anchored in our shared interests, democratic values and robust people-to-people ties.”

He further highlighted that the partnership has withstood multiple challenges and transitions, reiterating that New Delhi remains committed to advancing the agenda agreed upon by both nations. “We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to, and we hope that the relationship will continue to move forward based on mutual respect and shared interests,” Jaiswal added.

Trump’s remarks came shortly after his claim that the US had “lost” India and Russia to China, a comment that coincided with PM Modi’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin. Images of Modi engaging with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the summit were widely noted as symbolic amid Washington’s ongoing trade disputes with Beijing.
