The Income Tax Department has reportedly seized Rs 65 crore from the bank account of the Indian National Congress as part of its efforts to recover tax dues totaling Rs 115 crore.

According to sources cited by ANI, the tax authorities initiated the recovery action on Tuesday, marking a lien of Rs 115 crore against the Congress party’s accounts. A lien is a legal claim against assets to secure the payment of a debt or obligation.

In response to the recovery of Rs 65 crore, the Congress party has swiftly taken legal action. It filed a complaint with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, challenging the department’s recovery actions.

In its complaint, filed through its advocates, the Congress party alleged that the Income Tax Department encashed a portion of the balance in the party’s bank accounts without awaiting the outcome of the scheduled hearing before the tribunal.

The Congress party has appealed to the tribunal to halt further proceedings until the disposal of its stay application. The tribunal, in response, has directed that the status quo be maintained until the matter is heard.

The case is scheduled to be taken up at 2:30 pm today, where both parties will present their arguments before the tribunal.

The development marks another chapter in the ongoing legal battles between political parties and tax authorities, underscoring the complexities and challenges involved in tax compliance and enforcement.
