A shocking revelation has come to light regarding the sale of so-called “pure ghee” in the market, raising serious concerns about its authenticity. It is well-known that extracting one liter of ghee requires 15 to 18 liters of cow’s milk. Based on the purchasing price of cow’s milk, which ranges from ₹600 to ₹700 per liter, the cost of producing just one liter of ghee should amount to approximately ₹900 when factoring in expenses for energy, labor, and packaging, along with a 10% profit margin. Consequently, the retail price of “pure ghee” should be around ₹1,000 per liter.

However, institutions like the Tirupati Balaji Trust, which is government-administered, are reportedly awarding tenders for “pure ghee” at just ₹343 per liter. This raises alarming questions: if such low-cost ghee is being procured, what exactly is being passed off as “pure”?

The reality, as claimed, is that all “pure ghee” available in the market is likely mixed with fats from buffaloes and various imported animal sources, including pigs, rhinoceroses, and frogs. The practice of importing animal fats and mixing them into ghee is said to be occurring openly under government oversight.

Each year, millions of rupees worth of fats are imported and used not only in ghee but also in skin creams, pharmaceuticals, and industrial lubricants. The government is reportedly aware of these practices, yet turns a blind eye. The issue surrounding the alleged adulteration of ghee in the famous Tirupati laddus appears to be a mere political diversion.

When governments ignore such serious issues, they risk creating dire circumstances for the agricultural community. In a country where dairy production should be promoted as a supplementary source of income for farmers, the reality seems starkly different. The ongoing adulteration of “pure ghee” with imported animal fats represents a significant betrayal of farmers. What could be a greater deception than this?
