The peaceful atmosphere surrounding the ‘Nirbhay Bano’ meet at the Nilu Phule auditorium in the city was shattered on Friday evening when senior journalist Nikhil Wagle and his colleagues fell victim to an attack by BJP workers. Shockingly, several female colleagues, particularly from the MVA, also suffered injuries in a similar assault.

NCP’s Supriya Sule wasted no time in condemning the reprehensible actions of the BJP. In a statement on X, she expressed her dismay, stating, “The frenzy exhibited by the BJP mob while attacking journalist Nikhil Wagle and his colleagues is utterly inexcusable. Even Bhakti Kumbhar and other women who bravely attempted to protect Wagle’s car were not spared from the violence unleashed by the BJP goons, who also hurled verbal abuses.”

The enraged BJP workers directed their ire towards the Shinde-Fadnavis government, demanding the resignation of Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis.

Sule continued her scathing critique, questioning the BJP’s stance on women’s safety and empowerment. She remarked, “While they claim to champion the cause of ‘beti bachao’ (save daughters), their actions speak otherwise. Why does the BJP resort to such aggressive tactics despite holding a majority in government? What exactly are they afraid of? Do they not respect democracy? How dare they lay hands on women?”

A video circulating on social media purportedly captured the harrowing incident, showing BJP workers surrounding the car, pelting it with ink, and viciously shattering its windows with rods, all while chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

Nikhil Wagle, reacting to the incident on Saturday, bravely declared that he has weathered five attacks and remains undeterred in his mission to prevent India from devolving into a ‘Hindu Pakistan’. His unwavering resolve in the face of adversity serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of upholding journalistic integrity and defending democratic principles.
