In West Bengal, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in the East and West Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts due to the impact of severe cyclone Yaas. Scattered rain of medium intensity has already begun in North and South 24 Parganas.
In south 24 Parganas, more than 1 lakh 90 thousand people have been evacuated and taken to flood relief and multi-purpose cyclone shelters. In Sagar and Gosaba areas, river dams have already started overflowing.
In East Medinipur, tidal waves are crossing the guardwalls at Digha and nearby areas. Sea water has started flooding few coastal villages. Already one lakh inmates have been evacuated from the low lying coastal areas in the district. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is monitoring the overall situation from the control room of the state secretariat.
