Hathras: A man accused of raping a seven-year-old girl was shot while trying to escape police custody in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on Sunday, officials said.
The accused, identified as Aman Putra Chand Khan, allegedly snatched a pistol from a policeman while being taken to court and opened fire at the police team. In response, officers shot him in the right leg to subdue him.
According to officials, the incident occurred near the Bisawar checkpost when the accused requested a bathroom break while being escorted for a medical examination before his court appearance. Hathras Superintendent of Police (SP) Chiranjeev Nath Sinha told ANI, “Last night, an FIR was filed at Sadabad Kotwali regarding the rape of a minor girl, and the accused was arrested. Today, while being taken for a medical check-up, he asked to use the restroom near Nagla Konda. The Bisawar checkpost in-charge accompanied him. Suddenly, he snatched the officer’s pistol and fired, hitting our police jeep. In response, the inspector shot back, injuring him in his right leg.”
The police managed to recapture the accused and rushed him to a district hospital for treatment. “He has been sent to the District Hospital, and necessary legal actions are being taken,” SP Sinha added.
The accused had been arrested earlier following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family. The case has sparked outrage in the region, with local residents demanding stringent action against the accused.
