Mumbai: The Maharashtra Assembly turned emotional during the Budget Session as Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif struggled to control his tears while paying tribute to former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. As he rose to speak, Mushrif’s voice faltered, and the House fell into a stunned silence.

“Ajit Pawar has left us,” he said, pausing repeatedly, visibly overwhelmed by grief. What began as a formal remembrance soon became a deeply personal moment, reflecting the bond the two leaders shared over decades in public life.

‘Like a Headmaster’: Remembering Pawar’s Discipline

Recalling Ajit Pawar’s working style, Mushrif described him as firm, punctual, and uncompromising on discipline. “He behaved like a headmaster in the Assembly,” Mushrif said, noting that Pawar maintained strict oversight over administration and never tolerated delays or indiscipline from officials.

He added that Pawar had strong, clear opinions on issues related to sugar factories and cooperative banks, sectors central to Maharashtra’s economy. Mushrif revealed that Pawar had even held discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on cooperative sector concerns.

‘My Heart Sank’: The Call That Changed Everything

The most emotional moment came when Mushrif recalled receiving the phone call that informed him about the accident. “My heart sank when I got the call,” he said. “I switched on the television immediately and rushed to Baramati.”

His voice broke again as he told the House, “I stayed there for two days without sleeping. I never imagined such news would come about our leader.”

Beyond Baramati: A Special Bond with Kolhapur

While Baramati remained Ajit Pawar’s political stronghold, Mushrif said the leader shared a deep affection for Kolhapur as well. He spoke of Pawar’s constant engagement with the region and the warmth he showed toward local leaders and workers.

A Long Political Journey Together

Reflecting on his own career, Mushrif said he was first elected in 1999 and was made a minister within just two months. “I took oath nine times. Ajit Dada would often joke that whenever I take oath, Mushrif Saheb is there,” he recalled, managing a faint smile through tears. Then, softly, he added, “This time, he left me behind.”

Details That Stayed in Memory

Mushrif also remembered Pawar’s attention to detail — from wearing Jodhpur coats during the Nagpur Assembly sessions to choosing lighter attire during summer sittings. These small recollections underscored how closely he had observed his leader and friend over the years.
