In a poignant development surrounding the controversial Badlapur sexual assault case, the father of Akshay Shinde, the accused who was killed in a police encounter, has approached the Bombay High Court. The father is seeking land for his son’s burial amidst ongoing legal and societal tensions.

Akshay Shinde’s body is currently one of 35 that are overcrowding the morgue at Kalwa government hospital. According to police reports, Shinde was shot at point-blank range by Inspector Sanjay Shinde during what authorities claim was an act of self-defense inside a police van.

Shinde’s family is advocating for an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. They have requested that their son’s body be buried with the option for exhumation at a later date for further forensic examination. However, they have encountered significant challenges in finding a suitable burial site. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has strongly opposed the burial, arguing that it would defile the local burial ground .

As a result, the family is now looking for a discreet location to carry out the burial under police protection. Local activists have also voiced their concerns over the morgue’s overcrowded conditions, calling for urgent attention to the situation as multiple bodies await burial .

The Bombay High Court’s response to the family’s plea and the ongoing investigation into the encounter are closely monitored as the community grapples with the broader implications of this case.
