Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, alleging gross negligence in the handling of sewage treatment and river-cleaning operations across the state. His remarks come at a time when the monsoon is in full swing and environmental concerns are rising once again, particularly in relation to the polluted Gomti River.
Yadav claimed that sewage treatment plants across Uttar Pradesh have been mysteriously shut down, and untreated waste is now being dumped directly into rivers without filtration. According to him, this move appears to be a deliberate attempt to mask the state’s failure in cleaning drains and rivers, especially ahead of public inspections.
He pointed out that during his tenure, there were visible efforts by engineers and local authorities to clean the Gomti. However, the current administration, he says, is relying on monsoon rains to “flush out” the visible waste, making it impossible to assess whether real cleaning efforts have been made.
Yadav also raised concerns over the state’s long-term approach to urban cleanliness and water conservation, warning that environmental degradation could accelerate if immediate corrective steps are not taken. Environmental activists, too, have recently expressed worries over the state’s increasing dependence on rainwater to dilute untreated sewage, rather than implementing sustainable water treatment systems.
