In a dramatic turn in the Goa nightclub fire investigation, authorities in Thailand have detained Birch by Romeo Lane owners Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra in Phuket, deepening the international dimension of the probe into the tragedy that claimed 25 lives.
Sources confirmed that a special team from the Goa Police is preparing to fly to Thailand to seek custody of the brothers, who allegedly fled India just hours after the catastrophic fire in North Goa’s Arpora on December 6. Their detention comes nearly five days after the incident, during which investigators uncovered a sequence of events indicating a swift and deliberate escape.
According to officials, at 1:17 am on December 7, while firefighters were still battling the blaze at the nightclub, the Luthra brothers logged into an online travel platform and booked immediate tickets to Thailand. Immigration records reportedly show they boarded an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Phuket at 5:30 am, underscoring suspicions of evasion.
Earlier on Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs took a decisive step by revoking the passports of both owners following a formal request from Goa Police, tightening their legal noose further.
Meanwhile, in Delhi, a Rohini Court heard the brothers’ transit anticipatory bail plea, in which they sought four weeks’ protection from arrest—arguing they intended to return to India only if assured immunity from immediate custodial action. Government lawyers strongly opposed this request, asserting that the duo had fled to obstruct the investigation and should not be granted any relief.
