Tarakeswar: A four-year-old girl from the Banjara community remains in critical condition after being allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted near a railway shed in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district, close to Kolkata. The child was later found abandoned in a pool of blood beside a drain on November 8.
The incident occurred on the night of November 7 while the girl was sleeping under a mosquito net next to her grandmother. According to reports, the perpetrator cut through the net and took the child without the grandmother realizing it.
“She was sleeping with me. Around 4 am, someone took her away. I didn’t even realise when she was taken. I don’t know who the people were who took her away. They cut the mosquito net and took her away,” the grandmother told NDTV.
The girl was discovered the following afternoon near the Tarakeswar railway high drain, naked and bleeding, and was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The family highlighted the dire circumstances of their living conditions, with the grandmother stating,
“We live on the streets because they have demolished our houses. Where do we go? We don’t have any homes,” as reported by NDTV.
The authorities have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. However, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised the ruling Trinamool Congress government, alleging that police were initially reluctant to register a First Information Report (FIR).
West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari strongly condemned the handling of the case. In a post on X, he wrote, “A 4-year-old girl child has been raped in Tarakeswar. Family rushes to the police station, but FIR not registered! Taken to the hospital – referred to Chandannagar. Tarkeshwar police busy burying the crime. This is the true face of Mamata Banerjee’s free-for-all regime. A child’s life is shattered, yet the police are shielding the state’s fake law & order image.”
Adhikari further accused the police of suppressing information and failing to act, calling on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure justice for the victim.
