Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Shiv Sena leader, Manohar Joshi, passed away at 3 am on Friday at P D Hinduja Hospital, a day after being hospitalized following a cardiac arrest. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and was kept under observation. Joshi, who turned 86 on December 2 last year, left behind a legacy of political influence and grassroots activism.
Born on December 2, 1937, in Mahad, Maharashtra, Joshi pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai. His early political journey began through his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), later transitioning into a pivotal role within the Shiv Sena. Joshi’s rise in the 1980s highlighted his organizational prowess and deep grassroots connections.
Joshi’s political career reached its zenith when he served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 under the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition. His tenure was marked by various developmental initiatives and policy reforms. Following his tenure as Chief Minister, Joshi served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004, showcasing his versatility and experience in both state and national politics.
Despite his illustrious political career, Joshi remained connected to the grassroots level, often being seen as a leader who understood the pulse of the common people. On his 86th birthday last year, supporters gathered at his Dadar office to commemorate the occasion, underscoring his enduring influence and political legacy.
In recent years, Joshi had taken a step back from active politics, but his contributions continued to be remembered and respected by colleagues and adversaries alike. His passing leaves a void in Maharashtra politics, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum.
The last rites of Manohar Joshi will be carried out at the Shivaji Park crematorium. His mortal remains will be kept at his Matunga residence from 11 am to 2 pm, allowing people to pay their final respects to the veteran leader who dedicated his life to public service and the betterment of Maharashtra.
