According to sources within the Congress party, former JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar is poised to enter the political arena in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, this time in the capital city. This information was revealed to the Indian Express by Congress insiders.
This potential candidacy marks Kumar’s second foray into general elections, following an unsuccessful bid in 2019 when he contested on a Communist Party of India (CPI) ticket from Bihar’s Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency, ultimately losing to Union Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Giriraj Singh.
The decision to field Kumar in one of the three parliamentary constituencies that the Congress is contesting in Delhi, as part of a coalition agreement with INDIA bloc ally Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was reportedly reached after a closed-door meeting convened by senior party leaders on Wednesday evening.
Presently serving as the in-charge of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Kumar’s potential candidacy has garnered support from the party’s senior leadership. Sources revealed that discussions surrounding Kumar’s candidacy were held during a meeting chaired by Deepak Babaria, the Congress in-charge for Delhi and Haryana, along with Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely.
During the meeting, the party’s top brass reiterated its endorsement of Kumar’s candidacy and expressed a desire for him to contest from the city, signaling a significant development in the Congress’s electoral strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
