In the much-awaited kickoff to the Lok Sabha elections on Friday (April 19) at 7 am, the Election Commission reported an aggregate voter turnout of 60.03 per cent by 7 pm. However, this figure is tentative and subject to change, cautioned a spokesperson. Polling officially concluded at 6 pm, yet individuals in queues by that time were permitted to cast their ballots. The electoral exercise spanned 102 constituencies across 21 states and Union Territories.

Comparatively, the voter turnout in the first phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections stood at 69.43 per cent, although the constituency distribution differed, with 91 seats going to polls then.

Earlier in the day, the ECI had reported a turnout of 49.78 per cent until 3 pm.

Notable Turnouts and Observations
Tripura recorded an impressive 80.17 per cent voter turnout by 9 pm, while Bihar witnessed the lowest at 47.49 per cent by 7 pm.

The ECI characterized the turnout as “high” and noted that the voting process remained “largely peaceful”.

Several states, including Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territories of Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep, concluded their voting process in a single phase on Friday.

In a significant move, residents of 56 villages in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, cast their votes in polling booths within their own communities for the first time.

In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, voters from tribal communities turned out in large numbers, with the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar making history by participating in the electoral process for the first time.

Meanwhile, in Assam, over 72 per cent of the 86.48 lakh electors exercised their franchise during the first phase of polling across five Lok Sabha constituencies.

In Arunachal Pradesh, approximately 65.79 per cent of the 8.92 lakh electors cast their votes, as polling was conducted for 50 assembly seats amid sporadic violence and attempted EVM snatching incidents, resulting in 42 injuries. The voter turnout for the two Lok Sabha seats in the northeastern state slightly exceeded at 67.13 per cent.
