Pune: The Pune City Police have initiated legal action against Maharashtra Congress State President Harshwardhan Sapkal following allegations that he made controversial statements involving Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The complaint was lodged by Pune BJP City President Dhiraj Ghate at Parvati Police Station.
According to police officials, an FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 192, 196(1), 196(2), 352, and 356(2). Authorities confirmed that an investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.
Objection Raised Over Comparison With Tipu Sultan
The dispute stems from Sapkal’s remarks during a media interaction concerning a portrait of Tipu Sultan displayed in the office of Malegaon’s Deputy Mayor, Shan-e-Hind Nihal Ahmed. The portrait had already triggered objections from several political groups.
While addressing reporters, Sapkal stated that Tipu Sultan drew inspiration from the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, particularly the vision of Swarajya and resistance against colonial powers. He described Tipu Sultan as a courageous leader who fought against British rule and suggested that both historical figures symbolized bravery and patriotism.
BJP Alleges Sentiments Hurt
Dhiraj Ghate alleged that the comparison deeply offended followers who revere Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He stated that many consider the Maratha ruler not just a historical figure but a spiritual icon. Ghate argued that such remarks could disturb social harmony and demanded strict legal action.
Following the complaint, police registered the case and began procedural inquiry. Officials have stated that further steps will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Police Investigation Underway
Senior officers confirmed that statements and relevant evidence are being reviewed. Authorities emphasized maintaining peace and law and order while the matter is being examined.
